RUNNING PERFORMANCE

Running Performance/Injury Prevention

Robyn has been a licensed physical therapist since 1998 and a few years into her career, started specializing in running injury prevention, helping rehabilitate the injured runner and performing video gait analysis to improve efficiency, prevent injury, determine why pain might exist during running, and improve running performance. Robyn co-founded a two day continuing education seminar called Managing the runner which then switched to “When the foot hits the ground everything changes: Level 2 Running.” She has educated other health care professionals nationally and internationally for many years on the concepts of the running athlete.

Running Physical Assessment (2-2.25 hrs. $230)

  • Full body movement assessment including strength and flexibility; and injury evaluation (if needed)
  • Foot/ankle biomechanical evaluation
  • High Speed Video analysis on iPad
  • Footwear recommendations based on findings
  • Discussion in physical assessment findings and video findings
  • Running form recommendations (as needed) with practice on treadmill
  • Individualized running fitness/exercise plan as time allows, may require one hour follow up for more exercises dependent on extent of findings. (individual specific)

Video analysis allows us to capture walking and running in slow motion and view frame by frame more than the naked eye can see at normal speeds. It also serves as a great teaching tool as the client is able to see themselves move and understand how physical limitations are playing a role in particular movements and mechanics.

This comprehensive evaluation will get to the bottom of your physical limitations leading to abnormal movement patterns that cause excessive stress on the body. It does not chase the pain. It will look at your entire body from the head to toe and link dysfunctions found to how it’s then manifesting in the gait cycle.

This evaluation will include a movement screen, head to toe strength and flexibility assessment, foot and ankle biomechanical assessment, review of slow motion running (or walking) from head to foot with immediate feedback. Footwear choices and recommendations for appropriate footwear category for you, discussion of semi-custom orthotic options (as needed) and a tailored exercise program specific to the evaluation findings.

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothing to walk or run in. Expect to run for approximately 5-7 minutes. Contrasting colors of shorts and shirts works best. (i.e. not black on black; wear black shorts and white top etc.).

How long does the assessment take?

Approximately 2-2.25 hours (sometimes just a bit longer) for the initial visit; bring current running or walking shoes and any orthotics currently worn.

Who would benefit from this?

  • Anyone who runs, from the recreational to competitive levels. If you are currently running pain-free this will identify if there are any factors that may cause injury as you continue to run or ramp up your mileage. It will also find benefits in improving your efficiency in running when working together on your overall running form. If you have pain, it will also identify the source of this pain, and bring together a plan to attack the causes of the pain to allow you to run pain-free.
  • Anyone who enjoys walking for fitness but is experiencing pain. This slow motion analysis can see very subtle movements in the foot while walking and help identify why you may be having pain. Robyn will link the physical findings in the assessment with abnormal movements at the foot and give you a plan on how to improve this. You will be given an exercise plan, footwear recommendations, as well as orthotic advice as needed.

Follow-up sessions (1 hr. $85; packages available)

One hour follow-up sessions are available to add or progress any stretching or strengthening exercises needed; review and practice any running form modifications discussed at previous session; provide follow up video as needed; and add any manual therapy or hands-on body work as needed. These sessions can be personal training sessions as well, directed to your specific running goals/needs.
